Nifty script

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 10:00 pm

So, I was playing around on the file system today and thought ‘why can’t I get to where I’m going with just the actual directory name that I want?’.  Well, turns out, I can…

Drop the following line in a file.

CNG=`find . -name $1 2> /dev/null` && cd $CNG

Now add these aliases:

alias scd=’cd && source ~/path/to/file’

alias rcd=’source ~/path/to/file’

Now,  typing ’scd  <directory>’ will change to that directory within your entire  home  directory.   ‘rcd <directory>’ will do the same except relative to where you currently are.  I’m sure there are a few niceties which can be added, like some way of combining the two, but so far, its been quite useful to me.

Be careful using this if you have symlinks to other directories on you machine!  Have fun, and tell me if you have any cool additions to this useful script!

Unfortunate Domain Names

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 5:26 am

Just ran upon this one tonight:  poologic.com.  They even have it trade marked!  Why is it people can’t see hilarity of their domains?

Why is it…

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 7:39 pm

That over the past few weeks most everyone at the office has become ill enough to take a few days of R&R, and yet…I get sick over the weekend, spend it entirely in bed, and now I’m back at work on Monday?

Ah well, at least I caught up on Heroes

Crazy Day

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 3:39 pm

Going to get a ultrasound done today.  Its the first for #2.  We’re probably going to find out the exact birthday today as well.  That’s just crazy.  I’m excited and worried at the same time.  I can’t say I’m 100% ready by now…but I guess that’s why they give us 10 months.

Donovan’s Birthday

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 5:14 am

We had a great birthday party for my little 2 year old today. It was a blast. There were a ton of his friends from school there, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. It was a little chilly towards the end of the afternoon, but nothing too bad. Of course, Donovan was ready to keep going all night long, and was tough to put to bed. Still, quite fun. We’ll post photos on Flickr later.

Rosemary Shrimp and Fettuccini

Filed under: Food, Recipe — kleinptr @ 5:56 am

OK, I love to cook, and every once in a while I make up something new that is exceptional.  Tonight was one of those times.  Everything in this dish compliments each other quite well, and it takes about 5 minutes (not including boiling water).  So, here goes, my first recipe.

Ingredients:

  1. One pack of spinach fettuccini
  2. One pound cooked shrimp, shelled and detailed
  3. Fresh cut rosemary
  4. Garlic
  5. Sundried tomato pesto

Put your water on to boil.

While the water is going, mix the shrimp in a bowl with the rosemary, some seasoning salt, and a little olive oil.

Once you are done, fire up a skillet with some chopped garlic in it.  The jars you can get at the store are wonderful for this.

When he water is boiling, put in your fettuccini and don’t forget the olive oil with it!

After you have your noodles going, saute the contents of your shrimp bowl.  This should only take a couple of minutes, at which time your noodles are probably ready.

Turn off your shrimp and drain the noodles.  Serve your noodles and mix a generous spoonful of the pesto with them.  Add the shrimp, top with some parmesan and you are ready for a treat!

Suggested additions:  lime/lemon juice, dill, and/or a touch of hot sauce.

5 Things

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 8:48 pm

Woot, now you get to know meaningless trivia about me, thanks to Josh.

I’m addicted to gaming.  Love it.  Lately its been World of Warcraft, but I’ve always been a fan of RPGs, first person shooters, I’ve even forayed into the world of consoles.  If I wasn’t hitched, I’d barely come up for air from gaming.

I love to work in my yard.  I garden, build stuff, and rip things out of tMy fencehe ground.  Its all great fun for me.  My previous project was ripping out a huge oleander and replacing it with a bamboo fence.  Next on the agenda is a new deck (or sprinkler system).  BTW, if I can find all of my photos, I’ll do a post on my fence project.  It’ll be a doozy.

If I wasn’t a software developer, I’d be a…restaurateur (or astronomer :D ).  I love to cook good food.  And most of the food I cook is good, so that works out well for me.  I have all kinds of recipes that I’ve developed over the years.  Some day, I may even write some of them down so that I can remember them and even share them!

I’m the most anal messy person you’ll ever meet.  I love everything in its place.  I love a tidy house.  I love a tidy computer (desk, file system, desktop, whatever).  And yet… I’m too damned lazy to do it.  My yard looks good though (thanks Cirilo!) .

I’m a fanboy of the underdog (real or perceived).  I have ReplayTV, not Tivo.  AMD over Intel.  Archos not iPod (ok, I have an iPod too).  I bought my first Creative Labs sound card last year.   Almost had Dish instead of DirecTV, but their website hosed up when I was signing up.  (I’m a snob when it comes to working websites).  I want Microsoft to succeed with the new Vista UI, IPTV, and Zune just because there are so many Apple fanboys around.  I’m obnoxious that way.

Well, I hope you’ve learned a little, laughed a little, and cried alot.  Now go away until I think of something else to write.

Shout out to Reid and Chris, you’re up!

Microsoft CES Keynote

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 4:06 am

Microsoft @ CES.  Wow, this is really cool stuff.  Windows Live on Vista, IPTV on 360, Ultimate Extras, Digital Home.  Havn’t seen the whole thing yet, but so far, they’re coming out with some kick ass stuff this year.  Digital Home is a ways off, but their IPTV demo makes me wanna cancel my DirecTV which I just renewed ;)

Can’t wait to see if they’re doing a new 360.  I’m sure they will.  And it’ll have a bigger hard drive and HD DVD.  Sexy sexy stuff.

Confusing Domain Transfer Email

Filed under: Uncategorized — kleinptr @ 6:11 pm

So, I’m transferring kleinpeter.org over to Go Daddy.  I used Domain Monger originally, but they cost double what Go Daddy did.  Yahoo, whom I normally use now, does not yet support xfer, so they were out.  Anyway, I got this really obtuse email from Tucows/Domain Monger/OpenSRS

Tucows received notification on Thu Jan  4 23:45:39 2007
that you have requested a transfer to another domain name registrar.
If you want to proceed with this transfer, you do not need to respond to this message.
If you wish to cancel the transfer (or to approve it immediately), please contact us before Tue Jan  9 23:45:39 2007
by going to our website,
<some url here> to confirm.
You will need to enter the following information to log in and accept or decline the transfer:
     Domain Name:  kleinpeter.org
     Transfer Key: <the key>

If we do not hear from you by Tue Jan  9 23:45:39 2007, the transfer will proceed.

Wow.  The xfer url was no better.  Really confusing text, and two checkboxes, one for accepting the transfer, and another for declining.  Wonder which they would take if I checked both?

Go Daddy is pretty nasty when you sign up as well, but I was too lazy to look around more.  And they have those commercials with hotties, so I had to use them.  There, you go through tons of pages with mailing list subscriptions, and extra services to buy.  Many of those are even prechecked, so you have to be careful to accept the ones which are important (terms of service), and avoid the ones that are not (give my email out to everyone).  I’m glad I won’t have to deal with Go Daddy for another two years.  In the meantime, I hope Y! gets xfer working so I can fully move over to them.
